Healthy Orange Beef And Broccoli Stir-Fry

by May 17, 2018

Putting a healthy spin on family favorite takeout meals can be tough. Many “healthy” orange beef recipes online call for loads of brown sugar, a jar of orange marmalade (hello sugar or aspartame… no thanks) or other fake sweeteners.

The tricky part is that if you eliminate absolutely every sweetener then let’s be real, it’s just not going to taste that great. We decided to meet in the middle and came up with an alternative that uses just one tablespoon of honey and natural sugars from one fresh squeezed orange. This sauce has 8g carbs per serving compared with the average restaurant orange beef or chicken dish that rings in at upwards of 80g-100g carbs per serving. You can omit the honey if you want to knock the carb count down to be 4g per serving in the sauce.

Serve with cauliflower rice or just by itself!

Whole30: skip the cornstarch (just used for thickening the sauce) and the honey. Use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce.

Paleo:  skip the cornstarch and use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce.

  • 1 12 oz flank steak, cut into 2 inch thin slices
  • 1 orange juiced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 6 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 head broccoli cut into florets
  • 1/2 onion sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or avocado oil)
  • 2 tablespoons water

  1. Marinate: steak with half of the soy sauce for 30 minutes.
  2. Make sauce: mix the remaining soy sauce, honey, orange juice, orange zest, sesame oil, and cornstarch in bowl and set aside.
  3. Heat pan: add 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Cook steak: add steak to pan and sear for about 1-2 minutes per side or until browned. Set aside on plate.
  5. Cook vegetables: add 1 tablespoon olive oil, broccoli, and onion to same pan and cook 5-6 minutes until onions are translucent and broccoli is cooked. Add a few tablespoons of water at a time if needed to prevent the vegetables from getting black before they're cooked and tender enough to your preference.
  6. Add: sauce and beef back to pan with vegetables and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 more minutes then serve.
